Cohousing is often described as being like “an old-fashioned neighborhood,” which combines the benefits and features of private homes while also fostering social contact and community activities. Cohousing residents have their own private and complete homes with access to extensive shared facilities such as open space, courtyards and gardens, and a large common house with spaces for entertainment, crafts, exercise, frequent optional shared meals, and guest quarters.

Every cohousing community started with just one or two committed people who wanted to live more comfortably and happily. Set future residents of your cohousing up for success; give them a copy of Creating Cohousing: Building Sustainable Communities by Katie McCamant and Charles Durrett. They're the foremost designers of cohousing in the United States and brought the concept to North America in the 1980s.
