Like one big family, Sue and Art Lloyd are living their dream of creating a project where work and decision making are shared by residents, and young families mingle with retirees on a daily basis.
Located at the corner of Mound and South Mills streets, the newly developed Village Cohousing Community appears similar to other condominium projects from the outside. But inside, something different is happening.
Units range in size from a 700-square-foot, one bedroom unit to a 1,600-square-foot, two bedroom townhouse with a loft.
There is a gradient from most public to most private, so for example, the kitchens face the common areas and that’s the most public space, so people working in their kitchens can look out on the common areas and see their,” said Fassnacht. Each unit is designed with a different floor plan and prices range from $85,000 to $180,000.

The core group of what is now called Arboretum Cohousing had its first get-together in early 2003, with no particular site yet in mind. Planning began in earnest when Madison’s St. Marys Hospital, as part of it’s expansion efforts, offered a block of houses for sale to a developer who would meet the hospital’s and the neighborhood’s goals of home ownership and affordability. In late 2003, the Arboretum Cohousing proposal was accepted.
Since then, the group has been refining the details of the offer to purchase while working on design and organizational issues. We began the public outreach campaign in January 2006, and reached our target goal of two-thirds of homes presold by that summer. That triggered a host of other design and planning steps, and we excitedly held the groundbreaking ceremony in late summer 2007. Construction is expected to be completed the the end of September 2008.
Arboretum Cohousing will provide neighborhood community living to all who are interested in Cohousing. There will be 40 new and retrofit units in the midst of a tree and kid-filled neighborhood. Within walking distance to the revitalized downtown Madison, University of Wisconsin-Madison, and Edgewood College, this is truly urban living at its finest.
The Arbco neighborhood community includes homes ranging from 1 to 3 bedrooms in shared buildings to existing 3 and 4 bedroom single family homes from the 1910-1930 era. The 6000 square foot common house will have meeting and kitchen facilities overlooking Lake Wingra. A paradise for kids of all ages, there will be many safe nooks and crannies to explore, as well as the Lake Wingra beach and Vilas Zoo just around the corner.
